Lava Firehose

$45.00$3,300.00

A Coconut Palm Tree stands illuminated against an incredible backdrop of stars with Cook Pines reaching high into the night’s sky near Spaulding Monument in Kealia. The ahupua’a (cultural region) of Kealia on Kauai’s east side, was once a thriving community and home to the Kealia Sugar Plantation, owned by Col. Zephaniah Spalding for whom the Monument was built. This image was shot during a late night adventure using a technique called “painting light” to highlight the palm tree during a long exposure with the intention of capturing the starry sky.

Description

Kalapana, Big Island volcano eruption in 2017 flowed through a lava tube all the way to the shoreline cliffs and into the ocean.  I had to bike 5 miles to get to the designated viewing area.  The best time to view lava is at night!  I learned of a bicycle rental company who emails you the combination for the bike lock the night before giving me the opportunity to get the bike before they open early in the morning.  I got to the bike at 3 am and began riding in the dark toward the lava flow.  After about 4 miles, I got over the crest of a hill and saw the lava glow for the first time!  I was immediately overwhelmed with how immense it appeared!  Remembering that the viewing area is still a mile away from the lava, I continued on, in amazement of how powerful a sight I was biking toward.  This capture is from a small peninsula, looking out over the ocean at this lava “firehose.”
